Prehistoric mounds are common from the plains of the Midwest to the Atlantic seaboard, but only in this general area were they constructed in an effigy outline of mammals, birds, or reptiles. The Monument contains 1,481 acres with 200 mounds, 29 effigies, the others are conical, linear, and compound.

Originally established by Congress in 1935 as the Soil Conservation Service (SCS), NRCS has expanded to become a conservation leader for all natural resources, ensuring private lands are conserved, restored, and more resilient to environmental challenges, like climate change.
Established in 1905, the Forest Service is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Forest Service manages public lands in national forests and grasslands.
Gifford Pinchot, the first Chief of the Forest Service, summed up the mission of the Forest Service— "to provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people in the long run."

Great Rivers Partnership Summary
MRRC is a private, non-profit organization supported by its members and by cooperating agencies, institutions, and corporations. Membership is open to all interested parties. MRRC members want to encourage both pure and applied research on the water and land resources of the Mississippi River and its watershed.
Mississippi Valley Conservancy (MVC) is a regional, non-profit land trust based in La Crosse that has permanently conserved more than 11,700 acres of blufflands, prairies, wetlands, and streams in southwestern Wisconsin since its founding in 1997. MVC works with private landowners and local communities on voluntary conservation projects in seven counties along the Mississippi River.
The Northeast-Midwest Institute is a nonprofit and public education organization that seeks to enhance the region's economic vitality and environmental quality. It conducts research, develops public policies, provides technical assistance, sponsors regional conferences, and distributes publications.

The Mississippi River Parkway Commission (MRPC) is a multi-state organization which works collectively to preserve, promote, and enhance the scenic, historic, and recreational resources of the Mississippi River, to foster economic growth in the corridor, and to develop the national, scenic and historic parkway known as the Great River Road.
Prairie Rivers Network is Illinois' only statewide river protection nonprofit. PRN promotes the preservation of pristine rivers, the restoration of polluted rivers, and protection of drinking water, native fish and riverside wildlife, with the goal of safeguarding resources for future generations.

The Illinois State Water Survey, a division of the IL DNR, is the primary agency concerned with water and atmospheric resources. Water Survey research and service programs assess and evaluate the quantity, quality, and use of ground, surface, and atmospheric water resources in the state.

The Lower Mississippi River Conservation Committee is an organization of 9 member states dedicated to the wise utilization and conservation of the lower Mississippi River.
MICRA is an organization of 28 states formed in 1991 to improve interjurisdictional river resource management in the Mississippi River Basin.
Friends Groups
Protect, enhance and restore our aquatic resources by serving as volunteers and partners with the USFWS, provide education about these resources for our citizens, advocate for government policies that will support aquatic resources, & increase awareness of threats to the health of the Upper Mississippi fisheries.
The mission of Friends of Pool 9, Upper Mississippi Refuge, Inc. is to provide unique, fun, & educational experiences for it’s members. The experiences come through volunteer efforts & occur in a variety of ways.
A Friends group whose objectives are: enhance & preserve fish & wildlife habitat, increase public awareness & support of the refuge, advocate sound policy & adequate funding, provide educational opportunities, promote volunteerism & partnerships to assist refuge staff, assist the FWS in implementing refuge goals & objectives, encourage diversity of native species & habitat, & encourage responsible recreation.
